Tasi Bank + Green Check Verified
Interview with Hitesh Bajaria, Regional Vice President, Tasi Bank
Tell us about TASI Bank (Bank of Guam) and how the institution got started with cannabis banking.
TASI ® Bank, located in San Francisco’s Financial District, has served a broad community of business and commercial customers in the nine Bay Area counties since 1983. A maverick in community banking, it builds value for its client base by being flexible and adaptive and providing the traditional services of a bank combined with online, fintech capabilities. A division of the Bank of Guam ®, TASI ® Bank encourages its staff to create and provide innovative products and services that meet customer needs. It defines its own success by the level of success that customers achieve. As a Minority Depository Institution (MDI) and an SBA Preferred Lender, it has the regulatory flexibility and the expertise to say, “yes,” for customers who may have been denied at other institutions.
TASI® Bank has been engaged with the cannabis industry for over five years —with a client base in the industry in the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties — and we serve all tiers of cannabis-related businesses.
TASI Bank has been described as having a boutique cannabis banking program. Could you describe the types of businesses you work with and your current and future goals?
TASI® Bank works with all tiers of cannabis businesses and focuses on connecting with the types of customers where we are confident we can add the most long-term value.
California is a uniquely competitive market for cannabis banking. Could you describe the products and services you offer to cannabis businesses and how you differ from the competition?
TASI® Bank has a long history (over 40 years) of working with small and medium-sized businesses in a variety of industry segments that larger banks often avoid. With total assets of more than $500MM, TASI® Bank is large enough to offer a broad range of services, including deposit accounts, loans, online and mobile banking and remote deposit capture. TASI® Bank is also an SBA Preferred Lender as well as a Minority Depository Institution (MDI) which allows it to access many state and federal programs that are only available to banks with those designations.
What feedback have you received about your program, both from cannabis businesses and other businesses in the communities you serve?
Because our relationship managers have extensive experience in the cannabis industry and because TASI® Bank actively seeks clients in the sector, we have strong relationships with cannabis companies and a thorough understanding of the market. As mavericks, we do not shy away from finding ways to provide the services that cannabis customers are seeking.
Why did TASI Bank choose Green Check Verified as its cannabis banking partner?
The bank chose Green Check because they are a leading Fintech provider of compliant cannabis banking solutions and services. They provide a platform that is easy to use for monitoring the performance of the bank’s cannabis portfolio and compliance.
What has the experience been like working with Green Check Verified?
Working with Green Check has been great! The platform is easy to use, and their customer service is reliable.
Do you have any advice for other financial institutions considering entering the space?
We have been successful because we have thoroughly steeped ourselves in the cannabis industry. Our relationship managers and executives regularly attend conferences and actively follow the changes in the industry and the regulatory environment. That is our model.
Do you have any advice for other financial institutions considering entering the space?
I would strongly advise against entering the cannabis banking space without a trusted, experienced advisor/partner like GCV. Their knowledge in the space is bar none. Their added features like ‘Marketplace’ will help you gain credibility with your clients and make you stand out from the competition.
Do you have any advice for cannabis businesses looking to secure better banking services?
Talk to TASI® Bank. We’re active in the industry, knowledgeable, and, as a business-only bank, we are not distracted from our mission to make our clients’ businesses successful.
If a cannabis-related business would like to learn more about working with TASI Bank, what is the best way for them to contact you?
