Mind the Gap: What We Learned by Asking Compliance Teams Where They Actually Work
Building Better Specialty Banking Software, One Customer Conversation at a Time

The most useful thing a customer can tell you is not what they like about your product. It is the gaps the product has yet to close.
That was the premise behind our most recent Green Check Innovation Council session. As a reminder, the Council is a small, invite-only group of the compliance officers and program managers who use Green Check the most, the people running cannabis banking programs day in and day out. A few times a year we get them in a room, and instead of showing off a roadmap, we ask them where the work is still hard.
This quarter’s theme was simple: mind the gap. Where do you have to step outside Green Check to get your job done, and why?
What the data told us
Ahead of the session, we pulled together more than 140 pieces of input from this group alone: survey answers, in-app poll responses, ideas submitted through the portal, and signals from how they use the product every day. Looking across all of it, a clear through-line emerged. These teams already run more of their compliance work inside Green Check than the tools they used before, and they want to pull even more of it in. When we asked what would make the biggest difference next, the top answer was transaction investigation. Most members want to do even more of it inside Green Check, rather than stepping out to core reports or spreadsheets to assemble the full picture.
That ambition tracks with the reality of the job. Compliance teams still juggle three to five tools on a typical day, a patchwork of core systems, spreadsheets, and emails built up over years. Every platform in this space lives in that reality. What our customers are telling us is where to keep collapsing that patchwork into one place, and which pieces to bring in next.
And then there was the line that stuck with all of us. When we asked why some tracking still happens in Excel, one member put it perfectly: “Trackers are a compliance safe space.” People do not reach for spreadsheets because they love spreadsheets. They reach for them because a spreadsheet sometimes does exactly what they need in the moment. We took that as a to-do list.
Building with, not just for
We don’t like to “guess” when building. The Council exists because the best product decisions we have made came from watching customers work, not from guessing in a conference room.
Two features rolling out now came straight from this group. The first is a set of focused monitoring review templates for accounts that do not fit the standard mold, like indirect and ancillary businesses that have no sales or license data to review. Instead of skimming past empty sections, reviewers get a review built for the account in front of them. The second is customizable narratives, which lets teams build their own narrative templates once and drop in the right Green Check data automatically, whether they are completing a monitoring review or a SAR. Both started as feedback in this Council so we flagged these items, built them, and made them part of the product.
The loop we care about is simple: feedback comes in from all over, through surveys, polls, the ideas portal, and our Innovation Council sessions. We look for the patterns to act on, we build against them, and then we come back to show people what their input turned into.
Where we are headed
The gaps our customers pointed to are shaping where we invest next: making transaction investigation something you can do without leaving the platform, reducing the manual tracking that still lives in spreadsheets, and continuing to sharpen reporting and audit trails. We’re telling you where we’re headed, not handing over a dated roadmap, which is a deliberate choice on our end. The whole point of the Council is that our customers help us decide what matters most before we commit.
Cannabis banking is a worthwhile but at times challenging endeavor. The compliance teams doing this work are sharp, candid, and generous with their time, and we do not take that for granted. If we keep listening to them, the product keeps getting better in the ways that actually matter.
So we’ll keep listening and we’ll keep building with the people who use this every day. That is how all of us at Green Check collectively work with our customers.
